Thonon: Basilica of St
Francois de Sales
This Neogothic basilica,
which communicates with
St-Hippolyte‘s Church,
has two important
frescos called Chemin de
Croix. These are the
last two works of art by
Maurice Denis, completed
in 1943. Modern
stained-glass windows of
different colours
illuminate this
building.
Chateau SQUARE:
There is no castle in
this square since 1589.
However, there is a
statue of General
Dessaix, founder during
the Revolution of the
Club of Allobroges, to
gather supporters for
the unification of Savoy
with France. From the
terraces, beautiful
views of the Swiss bank
of Leman Lake, the Rives
quarter, Ripaille Castle
and in the background
the Alps.
Serves Sur Rhone:
Montgolfier Bridge
Upstream, you can see
the old, 14C Valgelas
bridge and downstream,
the river runs through
the dark, narrow Fouines
gorge, bordered by
disused taweries.
Les 2 Alpes: Valee de
Veneon
The road linking Bourg
d‘Oisans and La Bérarde
leads to numerous nature
trails. At Ougiers, a
path leads to the
protected site of Lac
Lauvitel (3hr there and
back). You can see
different types of
plants and views over
glaciers during the
trail from Champhorent
to the refuge of La
Lavey (3hr 30min there
and back), set at 1
797m. La Bérarde is the
starting point of
numerous climbs of the
Tête de la Maye (4hr
there and back,
difficult) and the Plan
du Carrelet (2hr there
and back), with views
over the Meije
Parc national des Ecrins:
The 92 000ha of the Parc
des Écrins boast a wide
variety of wildlife and
landscapes. Edelweiss,
lavender, glacial
buttercups and peonies
are among the 1 800
species of plants found
here. On the wildlife
side, nearly 210 animal
species live within its
protected boundaries.
Those lucky enough will
be able to catch
glimpses of chamois,
wolves, marmots, golden
eagles and even bearded
vultures. More easy to
see are the herds of
sheep that graze here
every summer on 36 750ha
of mountain pastures.
The peaks are another
unmissable feature.
Between Gap, Briançon
and Bourg-d‘Oisans, over
100 summits are more
than 3 000m high,
including Meije, Pelvoux,
Olan, and the Agneaux.
The Barre des Écrins
even reaches an altitude
of 4 102m. 17 000
glaciers continue to
withstand the effects of
global warming, among
which the Blanc de la
Vallouise glacier, a
monument which should be
seen before it melts
like snow in the sun...
Further down, cirques
and hanging valleys are
riddled with some 1
000km of signposted
trails. The GR 54, "Tour
de l‘Oisans", is a great
classic, but others
include the GR 50, "Tour
du haut Dauphiné", and
the "Tour du Vieux
Chaillol", which crosses
the Champsaur. The
peripheral region has
several winter sports
resorts. Information and
exhibition centres have
been set up at La
Chapelle, Embrun and
Briançon, and Gap has an
excellent documentation
centre at the Park‘s
headquarters. Guided
tours are organised by
the Guides of l‘Oisans.
Bordeaux:
St Andre Cathedral, only
slightly smaller than
Notre-Dame Cathedral in
Paris, this majestic
church has a Royal Door
that is famous for its
Gothic sculptures, and a
beautiful nave with a
Gothic choir stall.
Beautiful Renaissance
organ
Tour pey berland:
This tower was built in
the 15th C and crowned
with a steeple but it
has always remained
separate from
Saint-André Cathedral.
From the top, there is a
panoramic view of the
town, if you can manage
the 229 steps up the
narrow staircase and
don‘t hit your head on
the door which is a low
as it is narrow!
Orthez: Musée de la
Faïence et des Arts de
la table In the first
room, an explanatory
plan and a model of the
site illustrate the
history of the
manufacture. The
different production
stages and the various
types of faience are
also presented. The
second room displays the
collections and the
third contains a
fascinating exhibition
devoted to tableware
from the Middle Ages to
the present day, as well
as a collection of
faience of different
periods and origins. The
visit ends with an
illustration of the
ceramics road between
the West and medieval
China.
Maison de la Dame de
Brassempouy:
The name refers to the
famous "Dame à la
capuche" (Lady with the
cowl), known as the
Vénus de Brassempouy, a
mammoth-ivory statuette
dating from 23000 BC.
The exhibition area,
fitted out as a cave,
presents the
archaeological
excavations carried out
on the site during the
19C and 20C and in
particular the
conditions which led to
the discovery of the
statuette. Objets d‘art
and daily-life items are
displayed in the "alcôve
de Vénus" together with
casts of statuettes
found in Brassempouy and
other female figurines
of the upper Paleolithic
period. A brief survey
of the region from
yesterday to today
rounds off the visit.
